Objectives

  • To support students in learning what the different types of information disorder are and how they can be described.

Target group(s)

  • First-liners

Description

  1. Prepare for the activity by printing out the cards in the attached handout the same number of times as there will be groups of students playing the game. Cut the 16 cards (per set of cards).
  2. Divide the students in small groups. If wanted, this activity can also be done individually. Each group of students gets a set of 16 cards.
  3. The 16 cards correspond to four concepts related to information disorder (4 cards for misinformation, 4 cards for disinformation, 4 cards for malinformation, and 4 cards for fake news). The students’ task is to combine the four cards together that belong to the same concept.
  4. When all groups have connected the cards, the teacher can discuss with the class the correct solution to the card combinations. Based on the COSTAID guidelines, he/she can provide additional information that helps the students understand the concepts better.
  5. Optional: After learning of the correct card combinations, the students can use a computer to go online. This follow-up task would entail a search task where the groups have to find an example online for each of the four concepts that were discussed.
